The Best Luxury Ski Resorts for Christmas

The short answer

For a luxury Christmas in the Alps, Zermatt, Lech, Courchevel, Cortina d'Ampezzo and Val d'Isère stand out in our ratings for Christmas atmosphere. At this level the difference is service in the one week when everything is full. Of these, Zermatt and Val d'Isère also have high Snow Scores; Lech, Courchevel and Cortina sit lower.

What luxury means in Christmas week

In February, luxury is mostly about the chalet. At Christmas it is about everything around it: whether you can get a table on the 24th, whether the chef has done a Christmas Eve dinner in this resort before, how the transfer copes with the busiest Saturday of the year, and whether the village has a Christmas worth walking out into. The resorts below have the depth to deliver that when the valley is full.

The resorts

Zermatt

Zermatt is the classic choice when budget is no object: car-free, with snow on timber, horse-drawn sleighs, the Matterhorn lit at night and serious restaurants. It also has lifts to 3,883 metres, which is why its Snow Score of 87 is among the highest we publish. Arrival is by train, which takes the mountain drive out of the transfer; Zermatt is about three and a half hours from Zurich Airport.

Lech

Lech has a traditional Christmas. The Arlberg operator limits the number of skiers in Lech Zürs on busy days, which helps in the holiday weeks. The village sits at 1,444 metres, so its Snow Score of 45 reflects a dependence on the weather lower down, but the lifts reach 2,650 metres.

Courchevel

Courchevel at Christmas is fur coats, window displays and a torchlit descent and fireworks on Christmas Eve. It has its own altiport at 2,008 metres, used by light aircraft and helicopters, which is as close as the Alps get to arriving at the door. It is glossy rather than cosy.

Cortina d'Ampezzo

Cortina has an elegant Christmas: the passeggiata along the Corso Italia, pastry shops, and the Dolomites turning pink at dusk. It co-hosted the 2026 Winter Olympics. The skiing is lower and more weather-dependent than the Swiss or French choices, but for a group who value the evenings as much as the days, it is exceptional.

Val d'Isère

Val d'Isère combines a real village with high, reliable skiing, and does Christmas properly: a decorated centre, a Christmas market and a torchlit descent by the ski school on Christmas Eve. For a luxury group with strong skiers it is a sound all-round choice in France.

Verbier and St Anton

Verbier is cosmopolitan and busy, with excellent bars and restaurants; the Verbier Express runs directly from Le Châble, the valley station for the gondola, to Geneva Airport on winter weekends. St Anton pairs a proper Austrian Christmas with busy après-ski, and has its own station on the Arlberg railway.

The Christmas details that decide it

Christmas Eve dinner

In Austria and France the main Christmas meal is on the evening of the 24th: the French réveillon, and in Austria a family dinner after the tree is lit. That is the table to secure first if you are not in a catered chalet, and it is the evening your chalet chef will plan around.

Christmas Day

Christmas morning is usually quiet on the slopes, which is a luxury in itself. Book a private instructor or guide for the 25th and enjoy the quieter runs.

The Saturday and New Year

For Christmas 2026, Christmas Day is a Friday, so the Christmas week runs from Saturday 19 to Saturday 26 December. New Year week is generally the busier of the two, and New Year's Eve tables in these resorts go early. If your group is staying for both weeks, book the 31st at the same time as the 24th.

A snow fallback
