St Anton is where Alpine ski technique was more or less invented, and it has never entirely lost the sense that skiing is a serious business. The Ski Arlberg area reaches 2,811 metres and links St Anton with Lech, Zürs and Warth into the largest connected area in Austria.

It is not a beginner's resort. The famous runs — the Valluga, the Schindlerkar, the off-piste above Rendl — are steep and unforgiving, and the nursery areas are modest by French standards. What it offers instead is terrain that rewards good skiers for a week, a genuine Tyrolean village at the bottom of it, and après-ski of a volume and commitment that is close to legendary.
