Val d'Isère manages something most high resorts do not: it has genuine altitude and a village that feels like a village. The old church and the stone-fronted buildings of the centre are real, the skiing runs to 3,456 metres on the Pissaillas glacier, and the linked Espace Killy area shared with Tignes gives 300 kilometres of piste.

It is a serious skier's resort — the Face de Bellevarde is a World Cup downhill and the off-piste is some of the most celebrated in the Alps — but the blue runs off the Solaise are long and forgiving, so a mixed-ability group is genuinely well served. It is also expensive, and at Christmas it is very expensive indeed.
