Morzine is a town before it is a ski resort, which is exactly its appeal. There is a market, a main street with shops people actually use, and a church that predates the lifts by centuries. Families come back to it year after year for the atmosphere as much as the skiing.
The catch at Christmas is altitude. At 1,000 metres Morzine is the lowest resort in this guide, and early-season cover in the village is genuinely weather-dependent. The Portes du Soleil skiing above reaches 2,466 metres and the higher sectors are usually fine, but a bad December is felt here more than in the Tarentaise.
