The nearest station is Moûtiers-Salins-Brides-les-Bains, 18 km from Méribel, with buses and taxis up to the resort. Altibus coaches run from Geneva, Lyon and Chambéry airports. Méribel sits in the middle of the Three Valleys, which is its great practical advantage: you can ski into Courchevel one day and Val Thorens the next without ever taking a bus. The resort itself was laid out in the 1930s by a Scotsman with a rule that all buildings be in local stone and wood, and the result looks like a chalet village rather than a purpose-built block.

At 1,450 metres it is lower than Val Thorens or Tignes, so Christmas snow in the village is less certain — the higher Méribel-Mottaret at 1,750 metres is the safer base if December has been thin. The skiing above is extensive and mostly intermediate, and the nursery slopes are excellent.
