Alpe d'Huez sits on a south-facing plateau at 1,860 metres and markets itself as the Island in the Sun, which for once is close to accurate — it gets noticeably more sunshine than the Tarentaise resorts to the north. The skiing climbs to 3,330 metres on the Pic Blanc, and the Sarenne, at around 16 kilometres, is the longest black piste in the world.

It is a big, slightly sprawling resort with excellent beginner terrain right in the middle of it and some genuinely serious skiing at the top. The altitude means Christmas cover is usually sound, though a south-facing aspect cuts the other way in a warm December.

Christmas in Alpe d'Huez

Lively rather than quaint. There is a Christmas market, a torchlit descent and a busy bar scene. The resort is large enough that it never feels empty at Christmas, and the sunshine at lunchtime on a terrace is a genuine part of the appeal.
