Alpe d'Huez sits on a south-facing plateau at 1,860 metres and markets itself as the Island in the Sun, which for once is close to accurate — it gets noticeably more sunshine than the Tarentaise resorts to the north. The skiing climbs to 3,330 metres on the Pic Blanc.

It is a big, slightly sprawling resort with excellent beginner terrain right in the middle of it and some serious skiing at the top. The altitude means Christmas cover is usually sound, though a south-facing aspect cuts the other way in a warm December.
