Les Arcs is not one resort but four — Arc 1600, 1800, 1950 and 2000 — stacked up the mountainside above Bourg-Saint-Maurice. Which one you choose matters enormously: the numbers are the altitudes, and at Christmas the higher two are the safer bet.

The skiing reaches 3,226 metres on the Aiguille Rouge and links by the Vanoise Express cable car to La Plagne to form Paradiski, which the resorts put at more than 425 km of pistes. The terrain suits confident intermediates particularly well, and the tree skiing above Arc 1600 is a real asset when the weather closes in.
