Les Arcs is not one resort but four — Arc 1600, 1800, 1950 and 2000 — stacked up the mountainside above Bourg-Saint-Maurice. Which one you choose matters enormously: the numbers are the altitudes, and at Christmas the higher two are the safer bet.

The skiing reaches 3,250 metres on the Aiguille Rouge and links by the Vanoise Express cable car to La Plagne, making the combined Paradiski one of the largest areas in the world. The terrain suits confident intermediates particularly well, and the tree skiing above Arc 1600 is a real asset when the weather closes in.

Varies by village. Arc 1950 is purpose-built to look traditional and does it well, with a pedestrian square that comes into its own at Christmas. Arc 1800 is livelier and more functional. None of them has the depth of a real Alpine village, but 1950 comes closest.
