Avoriaz is built on a cliff edge above Morzine and no cars are allowed in it. Luggage arrives by horse-drawn sleigh, children can be let out of the door onto snow, and the entire resort is arranged so that you ski home rather than walk. For a family with small children that combination is close to unbeatable.

The skiing is part of the Portes du Soleil, a vast cross-border circuit linking twelve resorts in France and Switzerland. It is intermediate terrain in the main, with an excellent snowpark and the notorious Swiss Wall for people who want to frighten themselves.

Christmas in Avoriaz

Very good, and unusual. Because there are no cars and the whole resort is on snow, Christmas in Avoriaz has a self-contained, slightly storybook quality that families remember. The architecture is aggressively 1960s and not to everyone's taste, but the atmosphere is genuinely warm.

If you are not skiing

Modest. Avoriaz is compact and there is an aquatic centre, but a non-skier will want to take the cable car down to Morzine for a change of scene.
