Italy trades some vertical for everything else. The Dolomites do not look like the rest of the Alps — the pale limestone towers above Cortina and Val Gardena turn pink at sunset, and at Christmas they carry snow.

The skiing is gentler and more sociable than France, lunch is a two-hour event rather than a sandwich on a chairlift, and the money goes noticeably further. Cervinia is the outlier and the snow-sure one: at 2,050 metres with lifts onto the Plateau Rosa glacier and over the ridge into Zermatt, it has the top Christmas Snow Score in Italy by a clear margin.

Of the Italian resorts we cover, Cervinia scores highest on our Christmas Snow Score, at 74 out of 100, followed by Madonna di Campiglio at 67. The score rates how reliably a resort tends to have skiable snow in Christmas week, mostly from how often there has been snow on Christmas morning at weather stations since 1996; it is not a forecast, and no resort can promise snow.
