Italy trades some vertical for everything else. The Dolomites do not look like the rest of the Alps — the pale limestone towers above Cortina and Val Gardena turn pink at sunset, and at Christmas, with snow on them, there is nowhere in Europe quite like it.

The skiing is gentler and more sociable than France, lunch is a two-hour event rather than a sandwich on a chairlift, and the money goes noticeably further. Cervinia is the outlier and the snow-sure one: at 2,050 metres with lifts onto the Plateau Rosa glacier and over the ridge into Zermatt, it is the most reliable Christmas bet in Italy by a distance.

When is Christmas week in the Italy Alps?
