Quick answers about Christmas in Courmayeur

Is there usually snow in Courmayeur at Christmas?
Courmayeur scores 39 out of 100 on our Christmas Snow Score, which rates how reliably a resort tends to have skiable snow in Christmas week. That makes it more dependent on the weather in late December. The village is at 1,224m and the ski area reaches 2,755m. The skiing sits far higher than the village, so in a thin December expect to ride a lift up to the snow rather than ski back to the door. The score describes how reliable the resort tends to be, not what the snow will do this year — conditions vary from season to season and nobody can promise them.
What is Christmas actually like in Courmayeur?
On Christmas Eve afternoon children gather in the Jardin de l'Ange to meet Rhémy de Noël, Courmayeur's own Father Christmas, and walk him to the Alpine Guides' house to light his lantern. The Monte Bianco ski school's torchlit descent comes down to Dolonne on 30 December, and a large tree lights the centre from early December.
When is Christmas week in Courmayeur this season?
For Christmas 2026, Christmas Day is a Friday, so the Christmas week runs from Saturday 19 to Saturday 26 December. Most chalets in Courmayeur are let by the week, so that is the week to search for.

Courmayeur is a real Alpine town rather than a purpose-built resort, set on the Italian side of Mont Blanc with the pedestrian Via Roma of cafés, shops and old stone houses at its heart. Its mountain guides' society, founded in 1850, is the oldest in Italy, and lunch and an evening stroll matter here as much as the skiing.

The ski area above Dolonne, Checrouit and the Val Veny is self-contained and mostly intermediate, with wide views of the Mont Blanc massif. Skyway Monte Bianco, the rotating cable car from Entrèves, opens the way to serious guided off-piste. It suits intermediates, strong skiers with a guide, and anyone who values the town as much as the pistes.

39/ 100

Weather-dependent

39 out of 100 — more dependent on the weather in late December. The strongest factor here is the snowmaking coverage. Snowmaking covers 80% of pistes and opens the season when snowfall is late. Read this one closely: the village sits a long way below the skiing, and this score leans on the village's snow and height. The mountain above is considerably higher than the number suggests — you are likelier to be taking a gondola to the snow than walking out into it. Scored on 55% of our inputs; the rest are still being verified. Snow in the Alps varies from one December to the next, and no resort can promise cover on a given week.

The Christmas Snow Score compares resorts on how often there has been snow on the ground on Christmas morning, measured at weather stations over the last thirty years, with altitude, snowmaking and glacier access. It describes how reliable a resort tends to be, not what the snow will do this year — Alpine conditions vary from season to season and nobody can promise them. Common questions about Christmas in Courmayeur

How high is Courmayeur?

The village sits at 1,224m, and the lift-served ski area reaches 2,755m. Top figure is Cresta d'Arp, the highest lift of the Courmayeur ski area; Skyway Monte Bianco to Punta Helbronner is a separate cable car for sightseeing and off-piste, not part of the pistes. Altitude matters at Christmas because high ground holds snow in a thin December; the measured Christmas record on this page shows how that has played out year by year. Figures checked on 22 September 2026 against the source listed on this page.

Is Courmayeur good for families at Christmas?

Courmayeur works for families, with some compromises. It also does Christmas itself well, which children notice. This is our editorial judgement rather than a measurement, and the resort page explains the reasoning.

Can a beginner learn to ski in Courmayeur at Christmas?

Courmayeur is workable for beginners without being a standout. One thing to weigh at Christmas specifically: nursery slopes are usually the lowest terrain in a resort and so the first to be thin in December. Here, that is worth taking seriously in a poor December.

Which airport do you fly into for Courmayeur?

The usual arrival airports are Geneva (GVA), Turin (TRN), Milan Malpensa (MXP). Transfer times swing widely with traffic and road conditions on a Saturday in Christmas week, so treat any published drive time as a minimum and ask your transfer company for a figure they will stand behind.

Can I book a chalet in Courmayeur through this site?

We link to partners who do, and the links on this page go to their live Christmas availability. If you book through one we may earn a commission, which does not change your price.
