Livigno is a long, high village in a remote valley close to the Swiss border, cut off for much of its history and still reached over mountain passes or through a tunnel from Switzerland. It has been a duty-free zone for generations, so the main street is lined with shops as well as hotels, and older timber houses survive among the newer buildings. It hosted the snowboard and freestyle events of the Milan–Cortina Winter Olympics, and freestyle culture runs through the place.

The skiing is on two sides of the valley, Carosello 3000 and Mottolino, both open, treeless and well suited to beginners and intermediates, with good snow parks.
