Le Chalet à Val d'Isère

Le Chalet à Val d'Isère is a self-catered chalet in Val d'Isère, sleeping 12 in 6 bedrooms. It is ski-to-door, so skis go on outside and the day ends without a walk in boots, which helps with a group at Christmas. It has a hot tub, a sauna, a fireplace and a swimming pool. In the last week of December the afternoons are short and everybody comes in cold, which is when a hot tub stops being a luxury and earns its place. Beds: 5 large doubles and 2 singles, with 1 bathroom.

Val d'Isère scores 73 out of 100 on our Christmas Snow Score, with the village at 1849m. That is among the more dependable places to be skiing in Christmas week.

Sleeping 12, it suits a large family Christmas or two families travelling together. It lists family facilities such as a high chair or family rooms, which is the detail that decides it for anyone travelling with small children. It is self-catered, so you cook — including on the 25th. That suits groups who want to eat on their own schedule.

Resort supermarkets keep short and unpredictable hours over Christmas and many close entirely on the 25th. Order ahead or shop on arrival. A chalet this size usually only goes as a whole, so it is a better fit for a group that has already formed. Pets are not allowed. Check the bed layout and what is included (linen, towels, final cleaning) on Booking.com before you book — Christmas week is often sold as a fixed seven nights.
