Sölden lies deep in the Ötztal, a long village strung out along the valley road with hotels, bars and ski shops from one end to the other. It is a big, busy resort with a reputation for après-ski, and it opens the World Cup season each October with the giant slalom on the Rettenbach glacier. Above the village sits Hochsölden, a cluster of hotels on the mountainside with skiing from the door.

The skiing is high and extensive. Two glaciers, the Rettenbach and the Tiefenbach, are reached by gondola from the main area or by the glacier road, and three lift-served summits climb above the three-thousand-metre mark with viewing platforms at the top. That height is the case for Sölden at Christmas: snow on the upper mountain is about as dependable as it gets in Austria. The trade-off is the village, which is practical rather than pretty, and a Christmas atmosphere that comes more from the bars than from old streets.
