Obergurgl is the highest village in Austria and the answer to the objection that Austrian resorts are too low for Christmas. At 1,930 metres, with the Ötztal glaciers nearby and north-facing terrain above it, it has the most dependable early-season snow of any Austrian resort in this guide.
The ski area, shared with neighbouring Hochgurgl, is compact by Austrian standards and the terrain is mostly comfortable intermediate cruising, immaculately kept. It is a quiet, family-oriented, slightly expensive resort that people return to for decades. Nobody comes here for nightlife.
