Flaine was designed in the 1960s by the Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer, and its concrete buildings divide opinion — some find them bleak, others see an architectural landmark, with sculptures by Picasso and Dubuffet set among them. It is car-free and compact, and most accommodation is on or near the snow.

The resort sits in a sheltered bowl at the heart of the Grand Massif, linked to Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoëns and Sixt. The bowl has good beginner and intermediate terrain, and the Désert Blanc and the long run down to Sixt give stronger skiers plenty to aim for. It is one of the closest big ski areas to Geneva.
