Megève was shaped in the 1920s by the Rothschild family as a French answer to St Moritz, and it still carries that polish. The old centre, with its church square and bulb-topped bell tower, is lined with food shops, boutiques and restaurants, and the whole place is built for strolling as much as skiing. It is one of the more expensive resorts in the French Alps, and it looks it.

The skiing is spread across several sectors — Mont d'Arbois, Rochebrune, Le Jaillet and Côte 2000 — and links to Saint-Gervais and neighbouring villages. Much of it runs through trees, which helps in poor visibility and suits relaxed intermediates.
