La Clusaz is a real Aravis village with a church at its heart, a year-round population and a skiing history that goes back to the early 1900s. It sits a short way east of Annecy, which makes the lake and the old town an easy day out, and it has kept more of a village life than many French resorts.

The skiing is spread over five massifs around the village, from the beginner plateau at Beauregard to the high, open slopes of Balme, which draw freeriders. There is a good deal of tree-lined skiing for poor-visibility days. The trade-off at Christmas is altitude: the village is low and the resort has invested heavily in snowmaking, so the runs back to the village depend on it in a thin December.
