A car-free village at 1,800m ringed by thirteen four-thousand-metre peaks, with glacier skiing above it.
Saas-Fee is Zermatt's quieter neighbour and in some ways its equal. The village sits at 1,800 metres on a plateau surrounded by thirteen peaks over 4,000 metres — the highest concentration in the Alps — and the Feegletscher glacier tumbles down almost to the edge of the houses.
It is car-free, compact and genuinely traditional. The skiing is high, glacier-backed and reliable in December, though the area is smaller than Zermatt's and better suited to beginners and intermediates than to experts. For families wanting Swiss quality without Zermatt's prices or crowds, it is an excellent choice.
Christmas in Saas-Fee
Lovely. Car-free, small and surrounded by ice, with a village that decorates beautifully and a strong sense of being somewhere remote. Quieter than Zermatt and, for many people, the better Christmas for it.
If you are not skiing
Very good. Beautiful walks, the Allalin revolving restaurant at 3,500 metres, an excellent leisure centre, and a village you can wander without meeting a car.
