Davos is a town, not a village: it grew in the nineteenth century as a health resort for tuberculosis patients, and the long main streets and big hotels still show it. Thomas Mann set The Magic Mountain here and the painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner lived and worked in the valley. Between Christmas and New Year the town is taken over by the Spengler Cup, the best-known ice hockey club tournament in the world.
The skiing is spread over several separate mountains, the largest being the Parsenn, which links over to Klosters and has a long run down to Küblis in the Prättigau. The others, including the Jakobshorn, Rinerhorn and Pischa, are reached by bus or train. The case for Davos at Christmas is height: the town sits high in its valley and the Parsenn climbs well above it, so snow is dependable. The trade-off is that it does not feel like a mountain village, and moving between ski areas takes time.
