Chalet Schuler

Chalet Schuler is a self-catered chalet in Zermatt, sleeping 4. The nearest lift, Matterhorn Express Gondola, is about 460m away, so plan on a bus or a drive to the snow each morning. It has a hot tub. In the last week of December the afternoons are short and everybody comes in cold, which is when a hot tub stops being a luxury and earns its place.

Zermatt scores 87 out of 100 on our Christmas Snow Score, with the village at 1608m. That is among the more dependable places to be skiing in Christmas week.

Sleeping 4, it suits a couple or one small family. It lists family facilities such as a high chair or family rooms, which is the detail that decides it for anyone travelling with small children. It is self-catered, so you cook — including on the 25th. That suits groups who want to eat on their own schedule.

It is not ski-to-door, so factor in getting to the lifts each morning. Resort supermarkets keep short and unpredictable hours over Christmas and many close entirely on the 25th. Order ahead or shop on arrival. Pets are not allowed. Check the bed layout and what is included (linen, towels, final cleaning) on Booking.com before you book — Christmas week is often sold as a fixed seven nights.
