Châtel is the last village at the head of the Abondance valley, right on the Swiss border, and it is still a farming community as much as a resort. Cattle wintering in barns in the village, a church at its centre and an old customs house turned museum give it a working, unpolished character that suits families who want something relaxed and good value.

Its own skiing is split between Super-Châtel, which is gentler and links to Morgins and Torgon in Switzerland, and Linga and Pré-la-Joux, which are steeper and connect towards Avoriaz and the rest of the Portes du Soleil. The trade-off at Christmas is altitude: the village is low, so snow in the streets in late December is not a given, though the lifts climb quickly to higher ground.
