The Best Christmas Ski Resorts for Beginners

The short answer

For learning to ski at Christmas, choose gentle terrain that sits high enough to have snow. Alpe d'Huez, Cervinia, Saas-Fee, Avoriaz, La Plagne and Courchevel all carry our top beginner rating. Of those, Cervinia, Saas-Fee and Alpe d'Huez also have Snow Scores of 70 or more, which matters in a thin December.

Why Christmas is different for beginners

A beginner spends the first days of the week on the nursery slope and the easiest green and blue runs. In most resorts those are at the bottom of the mountain, near the village, which makes them the lowest, warmest terrain in the ski area. Swiss snow research shows the lower the station, the more pronounced the decline in snow cover, and the later snow tends to arrive. In February that rarely matters. At Christmas it can decide the week.

So the question for a beginner is not how big the ski area is, but where the easy terrain sits and how it is looked after.

What a good Christmas beginner resort looks like

Nursery slopes with snow on them

What helps is a high village with its nursery area on the doorstep. Val Thorens at 2,300 metres and Cervinia at 2,050 metres are the obvious examples. Where the village is lower, check whether the beginner area has snowmaking, or whether ski school moves up the mountain when the bottom is thin.

Snowmaking on the easy runs

Machine-made snow is dense and hard-wearing, which is why it keeps nursery slopes open through a dry spell. It is also firmer and faster than fresh snow, so early turns can feel slippery. It needs a wet-bulb temperature of around −2.5°C to make, so a cold December helps even when it has not snowed.

Somewhere to go after the nursery slope

By the middle of the week most adult beginners want a longer, gentle run with a view. Resorts with wide, easy blues above the village, such as Alpe d'Huez and Cervinia, make that step easy.

Short walks in ski boots

A beginner carrying skis in hard boots will tire quickly. A car-free resort where you can ski from the door, such as Avoriaz, helps a great deal.

Avoriaz is an interesting case: its Snow Score is middling because its lifts do not reach very high, but the village itself sits at 1,800 metres, so the beginner terrain on the doorstep is higher than in many resorts with bigger scores.

Learning over Christmas week

The changeover and your first lesson

For Christmas 2026, Christmas Day is a Friday, so the Christmas week runs from Saturday 19 to Saturday 26 December. Check when your group lessons begin, and use the arrival evening to collect boots and skis and make sure the boots fit. The changeover Saturday is usually also the start of the French school holidays, so ski hire shops and ski schools are likely to be busy.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

On the evening of the 24th many resorts hold a torchlit descent by the ski instructors, which is a good reminder of where a week of lessons can lead. On the 25th the lifts run and many ski schools still teach, but schedules vary, so ask whether your lesson block pauses for Christmas Day. If it does, Christmas morning is usually quiet on the slopes, which makes it a relaxed time for a beginner to practise with friends or family.

Private or group

At Christmas, group classes fill early. A few private hours at the start of the week, followed by a group, can suit adults who want to progress quickly before the New Year crowds arrive.

The week after

New Year week is generally busier, with more people on the easy runs. If you are choosing between the two weeks, Christmas week is kinder to a beginner.

For a mixed group

If you are learning while others in the group are experienced, look for a resort where the beginner area is close to the main lifts so everyone can meet for lunch.
