The Best French Ski Resorts for Christmas

The short answer

For Christmas in France, the high resorts are the strong bets for snow: Tignes leads our French Snow Scores, with Les Deux Alpes, Alpe d'Huez, Val d'Isère and Val Thorens close behind. For atmosphere, Val d'Isère, Courchevel and Méribel do Christmas well at altitude; Morzine has a festive market town, but at 1,000 metres.

Why France works at Christmas

France has the highest ski villages in our data. Val Thorens sits at 2,300 metres, and six more French resorts have villages at or above 1,800 metres. Swiss snow research finds the decline in snowy winters is most marked at low stations, while above 2,000 metres midwinter depths show no clear trend, so this height counts for a great deal in late December.

The French high resorts also open early. Tignes, for example, usually opens in late November, subject to snow, with the Grande Motte glacier above.

Three kinds of French Christmas

High and practical

Val Thorens, Tignes and Les Menuires were built to ski. Christmas here is a torchlit descent, fireworks and busy bars. The reward is snow at the door.

High with a village

Val d'Isère is the standout: a real village at 1,849 metres, lifts to 3,456 metres, a Christmas market and a ski school torchlit descent on Christmas Eve. Alpe d'Huez is lively, sunny and high. Avoriaz is car-free, with snow streets shared by skiers and horse-drawn sleighs, and suits families well.

Lower villages where snow is less reliable

Méribel has a strong chalet tradition and a warm, family-shaped Christmas. Courchevel is glossy, with a torchlit descent and fireworks on Christmas Eve. Morzine is a proper market town with a Christmas market and a decorated centre, but its Snow Score of 46 reflects a village at 1,000 metres. Samoëns, at 710 metres, is lower still.

How Christmas week runs in a French resort

The changeover and the roads

For Christmas 2026, Christmas Day is a Friday, so the Christmas week runs from Saturday 19 to Saturday 26 December. That Saturday is also the start of the French school Christmas holidays, which are the same across the country and cover both Christmas and New Year. That puts British and French arrivals on the same Saturday, so expect busy roads into the Tarentaise. Leave early, or take the train: the Eurostar ski service from London to Moûtiers and Bourg-St-Maurice, changing at Lille, runs on winter Saturdays.

Christmas Eve

The French celebrate on the evening of the 24th with the réveillon, a long dinner that often runs past midnight. Resorts mark it on the slopes first: many stage a torchlit descent by the ski school instructors, often with fireworks and mulled wine. In Les 2 Alpes, for example, the show starts at 6.30pm. If you are eating out, book the 24th well ahead, because French families will be doing the same.

Christmas Day

The lifts run and many ski schools teach. Christmas morning is usually quiet on the French slopes, after the late night of the réveillon.

26 December and New Year

The 26th is an ordinary day in France, so there is no second holiday to navigate. New Year week is generally busier than Christmas week, and because French schools are still on holiday into the New Year, resorts stay busy into the first days of January.

• Snow first: Val Thorens, Val d'Isère, Tignes or Alpe d'Huez.
• Snow and Christmas together: Val d'Isère.
• Young children: Avoriaz for the car-free village, or Méribel and La Plagne for chalets and gentle terrain; see our family guide.

• A town Christmas: Morzine, accepting that you may take lifts up to higher snow.
