The Best Swiss Ski Resorts for Christmas

The short answer

For Christmas in Switzerland, Zermatt and Saas-Fee are our top choices: both are car-free, both have glacier terrain above 3,400 metres, and both have Snow Scores above 70. Zermatt adds the Matterhorn and serious restaurants; Saas-Fee is quieter and smaller. Verbier is the lively, cosmopolitan alternative.

What makes Switzerland different at Christmas

Three things set the Swiss resorts apart in late December: car-free villages, high glacier terrain, and trains that run to the door.

Car-free villages

Zermatt and Saas-Fee have no private cars. Snow stays white in the streets, the traffic is mostly electric taxis and horse-drawn sleighs, and on Christmas Eve the villages are quiet in a way that road-served resorts cannot be.

Glacier terrain

Zermatt's lifts reach 3,883 metres at the Matterhorn glacier, and via the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing, opened in 2023, you can continue over the border to Cervinia in Italy, on skis or without them. Saas-Fee's Metro Alpin, an underground funicular opened in 1984, climbs from Felskinn to Mittelallalin at 3,456 metres. In a thin December these are the terrain the valley falls back on.

Trains

For British visitors, Swiss rail is the reason a Christmas transfer can be relaxing rather than a long drive on the busiest Saturday of the year.

• Zermatt: train from Visp; if you drive, park at Täsch and take the shuttle train, at 20-minute intervals and 12 minutes long. Zermatt is about three and a half hours from Zurich Airport and four from Geneva or Basel.
• Saas-Fee: PostBus from Visp station into the village.
• Verbier: train to Le Châble, where the gondola station is next to the platform. The Verbier Express runs direct to Geneva Airport on weekends between December and April.

Zermatt

Christmas in Zermatt is timber and snow, horse-drawn sleighs, the Matterhorn lit at night, and restaurants that take the 24th and 25th seriously. For non-skiers the Gornergrat railway, running since 1898, climbs to a viewing platform at 3,089 metres. It has our top ratings for atmosphere and non-skiers and a Snow Score of 87.

Saas-Fee

Saas-Fee is small, car-free and surrounded by ice, with a village that decorates beautifully. It carries our top ratings for families and beginners and a Snow Score of 87. For many families it is the better Christmas of the two: quieter than Zermatt, with the nursery slopes close to the village.

Verbier

Verbier is cosmopolitan, busy and glamorous, with excellent bars and restaurants and a well-heeled international crowd at Christmas. Its village sits at 1,490 metres, lower than the other two, and its Snow Score is 57.

How Christmas week runs in a Swiss resort

The changeover

For Christmas 2026, Christmas Day is a Friday, so the Christmas week runs from Saturday 19 to Saturday 26 December. The Swiss train connections make a Saturday arrival straightforward; allow time for the change at Visp with luggage and skis.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

Book Christmas Eve dinner early, as resort restaurants fill on the 24th. Christmas Day is a public holiday in all Swiss cantons. The lifts run and many ski schools still teach, but the slopes are often quiet in the morning.

26 December

St Stephen's Day is a public holiday in most Swiss cantons, but not in Valais, where all three of our Swiss resorts sit. In Zermatt, Saas-Fee and Verbier the 26th is therefore an ordinary working day, and shops keep their usual hours.

New Year

New Year week is generally busier than Christmas week across the Alps.
