When Christmas holidays go on sale

The pattern is consistent. The big operators put the next winter on sale in early summer, well over a year ahead. easyJet releases the flights covering Christmas and New Year about a year before.
How early Christmas sells out
What we measured
On 21 September 2026 we counted which weeks one UK operator, Le Ski, showed as sold across its 33 chalets. For Christmas week, 20 of 32 were sold; for each of the mid-January weeks, 22 of 33. At that operator, at that date, Christmas had not sold out faster than January. Booking by September gave a choice of about a third of the chalets for Christmas — which is less than in spring, but a long way from nothing.
What operators have said
- Skiworld recommends booking a Christmas ski holiday "between May and September". It says the best places, "especially in snow-sure, high-altitude resorts", go fast.
- Powder Edition, a chalet agent, advises booking Christmas and New Year chalets nine to twelve months ahead. For the 2026/27 season it suggested enquiring between January and June 2026. It says that by September, flagship properties in the top resorts will be fully booked.
- Ski Beat said on 19 September 2025 that its departure of 20 December 2025, which covered Christmas, was already 65% sold.
- Ski Solutions said in February 2026 that demand for winter 2026/27 had started in January, where it usually starts in late February or March.
- SNO said in February 2026 that anyone who needs school-holiday dates should book early, because "the cheapest catered chalets sell out faster than anything else".
- By mid-December 2025, Iglu Ski said the festive season was all but sold out, and Ski Beat said it had all but sold out for New Year.
The shape of the calendar in 2026
Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday. Ski Beat reported strong demand for departures on both 19 and 26 December. OVO Network pointed out that Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, which is changeover day for most properties. So in 2026 you will usually choose between a week that starts before Christmas and one that starts on Boxing Day. If you need to arrive on a particular day, that narrows the choice further.
What to book, and in what order
1. The chalet
The chalet sells out first. Most operators sell Christmas as a package with flights and transfers, so for most people booking the chalet settles the rest.
2. Flights, if you are booking independently
Watch for the release dates in the table above. easyJet's Christmas flights went on sale in the December of the year before, and Jet2's ski flights in the July about 17 months before.
3. Lift passes
Lift passes do not sell out, but some areas reward buying ahead:
- Verbier 4 Vallées takes 10% off if you buy at least 10 days before arrival (2026/27).
- Dolomiti Superski gave 5% off passes bought at least two days before the first day of skiing (2025/26).
- Zermatt prices by demand and says early bookers get the best price.
- Ski Arlberg opens online sales for 2026/27 on 27 November 2026.
4. Ski school and childcare
Christmas week is peak season for ski schools. Skischule Arlberg in St Anton, Scuola Sci Cortina and Scuola Sci Selva in Val Gardena all price the Christmas weeks in their top band, and group places fill up with families on the same school-holiday dates. Book lessons and any childcare once the holiday is confirmed. VIP SKI notes that its childcare team does not work on Christmas Day, so ask your operator what happens on the 25th.
5. Restaurants
Some Christmas dinners open for booking only a few weeks before. In Innsbruck, the tourist office's 2026 list notes that one hotel restaurant takes reservations for its gala dinner only from 1 December 2026.
If you are booking late
Late availability does come up, but no operator we found publishes when it appears or how much of it there is. By mid-December 2025 several operators described Christmas and New Year as all but sold out, while January still had availability. If your dates are flexible, the weeks after New Year are easier to book.
