What Is Christmas Dinner Like in a Catered Ski Chalet?

By Charnette Labs · Updated 21 September 2026

In a catered chalet, your host cooks Christmas dinner on the evening of 25 December, and it is usually a British roast turkey with the trimmings, wine included. Several operators also add a Christmas breakfast with Bucks Fizz, and some serve champagne before dinner or sparkling wine at midnight on Christmas Eve.

The host still has a day off in Christmas week, but operators move it away from the 25th. For Christmas 2026, Skiworld's hosts are off on Wednesday 23 December and Mark Warner's dine-out night is the Thursday, Christmas Eve. Everything below comes from the operators' own pages, as published in September 2026.

What a catered chalet Christmas usually includes

Across the operators we checked, the pattern is much the same. Christmas dinner is served in the chalet on the evening of 25 December, it is a British-style roast with turkey, and wine is included with it. Most add something on Christmas morning and something on Christmas Eve. Where they differ is in the detail: champagne or not, and which day the host has off.

Operator Christmas Day dinner Drinks Christmas Eve Host's day off
Skiworld Three or four courses with crackers, canapés and aperitifs Free-flowing wine on 24 and 25 Dec; Bucks Fizz at breakfast Midnight celebration with mince pies and sparkling wine Wednesday 23 Dec 2026 (subject to change)
VIP SKI Mackerel pâté, roast turkey or nut roast, Christmas pudding or chocolate orange ganache, cheese Champagne and canapés before dinner; Buck's Fizz at breakfast Mince pies and vin chaud after skiing; Santa visits children Childcare team off on Christmas Day
Le Ski Smoked salmon, roast turkey, Christmas pudding with rum sauce, cheeseboard Unlimited red, white and rosé, "and lots of Champagne" Not stated Not stated
Mark Warner (Chalet Hotel L'Ecrin, Tignes) Turkey, sea bass or nut roast; Christmas pudding, Eton mess or French cheese Wine with dinner Guests dine out in resort Dine-out Thursday (24 Dec on the 20 Dec 2026 departure)
Inghams Turkey with all the trimmings, Christmas pudding, mince pies Complimentary wine with dinner Not stated Not stated for Christmas
Neilson Traditional dinner, Christmas pudding, mince pies and coffee Bucks Fizz at breakfast; free-flowing wine Not stated Not stated for Christmas

Christmas morning in the chalet

Christmas Day is a working day for the chalet host at the operators that describe it. Skiworld serves a Christmas Day breakfast with smoked salmon and Bucks Fizz. VIP SKI serves Eggs Royal with asparagus and a glass of Buck's Fizz, alongside the usual pastries, cereals and porridge. Neilson also lists Bucks Fizz with breakfast, and invites guests to bring presents to put under the tree for Christmas morning. The Chalet Company in Méribel says its hosts agree the breakfast with guests in advance, from pancakes and pastries to a full fry-up, and that it can be "as early or as relaxed as you like".

What is on the Christmas dinner menu?

Every operator that publishes a menu serves roast turkey. The published menus look like this:

  • VIP SKI: mackerel pâté with pickled vegetables and melba toast; roast turkey with sprouts, cranberry sauce, stuffing, roast potatoes and gravy, or a nut roast; Christmas pudding with brandy butter or a chocolate orange ganache; cheese board and coffee.
  • Le Ski: smoked salmon "with a chalet host twist"; roast turkey with the trimmings; Christmas pudding with rum sauce; cheeseboard with fruit and nuts; coffee and mints.
  • Mark Warner at Chalet Hotel L'Ecrin in Tignes: a choice of turkey, fillet of sea bass with a lemon and tarragon beurre blanc, or nut roast with salsa rosa; then Christmas pudding, Eton mess or local French cheese, with petits fours in the bar.
  • Skiworld: canapés, aperitifs and crackers before a three or four-course dinner, finishing with chocolates and coffee.

Which day does the chalet host have off at Christmas?

In a normal week most chalet hosts have one day off, and dinner is not served that evening. Ski Beat's hosts are off on Wednesdays, with a self-service breakfast on Thursday morning. Chaletline, Skiworld and SNO describe the same pattern: breakfast is laid out and guests eat out at their own expense.

Christmas week changes this. Ski Beat's FAQ says the night off "differs on the Christmas and New Year weeks" without saying which day it moves to. The two operators that name a day for Christmas 2026 both keep it clear of Christmas Day:

  • Skiworld: hosts have Wednesday 23 December 2026 off, which it marks as subject to change.
  • Mark Warner: the dine-out night at Chalet Hotel L'Ecrin is the Thursday. On its Christmas departure of Sunday 20 December 2026, that is Christmas Eve, and Christmas dinner is served in the chalet hotel on the 25th.

A night off on 24 December puts you in the resort for Christmas Eve events, but it also means booking a table that night, so ask which night is off before you travel.

Childcare can follow a different rota from the kitchen. VIP SKI says its childcare team does not work on Christmas Day.

Drinks at Christmas

Wine with dinner is standard at most UK operators, but what counts as included varies. Inghams lists three reds, a white and a rosé, plus beer, soft drinks and water. Ski Beat includes unlimited red, white or rosé and sells upgrades. SNO, a booking agent, points out that free wine "is not universal, so check before you book".

For Christmas itself, the extras operators name are:

  • Champagne: VIP SKI serves it with canapés before Christmas dinner, and Le Ski promises "lots of Champagne" with its Christmas menu.
  • Sparkling wine at midnight: Skiworld holds a Christmas Eve midnight celebration with mince pies and sparkling wine.
  • Bucks Fizz: Skiworld, VIP SKI and Neilson all serve it at Christmas breakfast.
  • Mulled wine: Skiworld on arrival and at afternoon tea, VIP SKI on Christmas Eve, and Mark Warner after skiing.

Dietary requests over Christmas

Tell the operator when you book, and do not leave it until you arrive. Christmas Day falls in the middle of the week, and shops in resort may not stock what the host needs at short notice. Le Ski warns that it can take several days to source a product once you are in resort.

Operator Charge Notice
Ski Beat No charge for dietary requirements At least 14 days before departure
Inghams Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or dairy-free menus at no extra cost Not stated
Le Ski No charge for long-term dietary needs; does not cater for short-term diets At booking, in detail
Skiworld Vegetarian, pescatarian, no pork, no fish: free if pre-booked, €40pp in resort. Vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free: £29pp pre-booked, €75pp in resort Before you book

Skiworld says it cannot cater for some combinations, such as no fish and no dairy, and Ski Beat says its hosts are not professional chefs and cannot guarantee the complete avoidance of a food such as nuts.

How Christmas Eve is celebrated in the Alpine countries

Your chalet host will be cooking a British Christmas on the 25th, but the resort around you celebrates on the evening of the 24th.

France

The French réveillon is the Christmas Eve dinner, historically eaten after the night-time church service. France 24 lists foie gras, oysters, smoked salmon, lobster and crayfish, a stuffed bird (turkey, capon or guinea fowl) and a bûche de Noël, the log-shaped rolled sponge. That is why so many French resorts hold their parades, torchlit descents and fireworks on the 24th. Our guide to Christmas markets in ski resorts lists some of those programmes.

Austria

In Tirol, the regional tourist board says Christmas Eve dinner is not goose or carp but a hearty soup with noodles and sausages. Families eat, open presents, then go to Christmas mass at midnight or earlier.

Switzerland

There is no single Swiss Christmas dinner. Swissinfo describes the main celebration as Christmas Eve evening, with boiled ham (Schüfeli or Rollschinkli), fondue chinoise, turkey with chestnuts in the French-speaking areas, and a veal and mushroom pastry in Lucerne.

Italy

South Tyrol Tourism's Christmas pages feature Zelten, a fruitcake of dried fruit, sultanas, figs and spices, and a range of Christmas biscuits.

Before you book a catered Christmas

  • Ask which night the host has off in Christmas week, and book a restaurant early if it is the 24th.
  • Send dietary requests at booking and ask what the Christmas Day alternative is.
  • If you have children, ask whether they eat with the adults on the 25th and whether childcare runs that day.

Our catered Christmas chalets collection lists chalets with a host, and when to book a Christmas ski chalet covers how early Christmas weeks sell.

Common questions

Does the chalet host cook on Christmas Day?

Yes, at the operators that describe it. Skiworld, VIP SKI, Le Ski, Inghams, Neilson and Mark Warner all serve Christmas dinner in the chalet on 25 December, and several add a Christmas breakfast with Bucks Fizz.

Which day is the chalet staff day off in Christmas week?

It varies. For Christmas 2026 Skiworld's hosts are off on Wednesday 23 December (subject to change), and Mark Warner's dine-out night at Chalet Hotel L'Ecrin is the Thursday, which is Christmas Eve on its 20 December departure. Ski Beat says its usual Wednesday night off differs in Christmas and New Year weeks.

Is champagne included with Christmas dinner in a chalet?
